Trip to Port Douglas & Great Barrier Reef
Tuesday, 23 January 2007
Corinna and I took a well earned and needed break over Christmas to Port Douglas.

Trip to Great Barrier Reef - Jeremy and Corinna We made the 3hr flight with Qantas arriving at Cairns. We then travelled by road the hour or so along the costal road north to Port Douglas. We stayed at the Sheraton Mirage which was a resort type hotel. If I were to go again I would opt for an apartment type hire instead, the village was a great place to have a few drinks and some really great food.

I would make special mention of "The Living Room" which took especially good care of us and made us very at home. Their menu was outstanding and we especially enjoyed the Sushi Sunday and the Lounge DJ.... If you are in town do go see them.

We used PD as our gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. We travelled out with HABA tours. This was also especially good as they were very friendly and the service was not overcrowded like some of the larger operators! I had three dives on the outer reef and you can see the photos in the Gallery. I hired an Underwater camera and tried using one for the first time, I am pretty happy with the results.

We found the inability to swim in the sea a frustration. The season meant that Oz threw some of its nasties waterborne creatures at us, with Crocs and Box jellies to name a few... Swimming was confined to the pool and the reef (stinger suits were worn).

The area was best described as similar to my travels in the Caribbean or Costa rica.

Why not take a look at some of the fantastic photos of Port Douglas and The Great Barrier Reef
